Confluence is for anyone interested in:

  • Emergence of high-growth companies,

  • Inefficiencies in financial markets, and

  • Endeavor of price discovery.

Asymmetry of information flow is greatest in the universe of companies under $1 billion in market capitalization. Naturally, the gap is especially glaring among microcaps and nanocaps, which is a big reason why emerging-growth investing is so challenging. The hurdles are compounded when investors rely too heavily on short-term market trends and backward-looking corporate financials to make decisions rather than investigate less traveled paths.

A focus on innovation, intangibles and narratives, or what we call the 'Third Stream' can be more illuminating than any quantitative analysis. Embracing qualitative factors, alternative data and market intelligence from diverse stakeholders expands perspective and grows insight.

Ultimately, a synthesis of all streams is most successful when it activates deeper inquiries into companies. Continuing along this path, the effort improves decision-making when evaluating corporate strategies and performance.

Our audience includes tech and growth stock investors, equity analysts, hedge fund managers, investment bankers, CEOs, CFOs, technologists and many others. We are committed to work hard to deliver engaging content and original research & analysis to save you time.

Tributaries form Confluence.

Starting in the mid-nineties, Josh created and produced the financial website Next Wave Stocks, which captured a ‘Best of the Web’ honor from Money Magazine. He also introduced NextWave 100, the first and only small-cap technology stock index (three industry groups: Infotech, Biotech and Cleantech), and developed Technodynamic Investing, a proprietary methodology that resembles the strategies applied more recently by fund groups such as ARK and Baron.

After merging into ChangeWave Research, he eventually became analyst and editor for ChangeWave MicroCap Investor. Biotech and life science companies formed the largest portion of the portfolio, which included early buy recommendations ahead of Wall Street on Antares, Inovio and Spectrum Pharma, subsequently reaching valuations as high as $960 million (acquired by Halozyme), $5.0 billion and $2.8 billion respectively. Another recommendation, Energy Recovery, is valued at $1.7 billion today.

Next, Josh took the reins at ChangeWave Investing, an advisory service powered by the 451 ChangeWave Alliance, a research network whose industry-leading surveys provide data on the direction of the overall economy and trends in consumer and business technology demand. Prescient calls include the January 2008 signal of a consumer and business recession, the demise of the Blackberry smart phone and huge success of Apple’s iPhone, likewise for PCs and tablets markets, and declaring the onset of cloud computing’s eclipse of overall IT spending as early as 2011.

This led to a two-year gig at 451 Research (a division of S&P Global Market Intelligence) as Senior Research Analyst of Digital Economics, where Josh established the Macroeconomic Outlook channel for 451 Research, covering the intersection of macroeconomic and IT industry trends. He also advised the 451 Alliance’s Leading Indicator Panel and was editor of its flagship publication, MacroEmerging Outlook.

All together now.

Confluence, by definition, is a coming or flowing together, meeting, or gathering at one point. It is also the flowing together of two or more streams. In the investment world, confluence occurs when multiple ideas or strategies are used together to form a single, coherent idea or strategy.

Another meaning of 'confluence' is a crowd or meeting place, and that's what we're aspiring to create for this newsletter!
